Why Polyaspartic Fits Fort Myers
Polyaspartic coatings are a newer type of resin related to polyurea, and in Fort Myers they solve the biggest weakness of epoxy: sunlight. HomeGuide gives polyaspartic an excellent grade on UV resistance and epoxy a poor-to-fair one. A polyaspartic floor coating stays clear and holds its color where epoxy would yellow and chalk. Because so many Lee County garages face the afternoon sun and so many homes have screened lanais, it is the topcoat we use most, and sometimes the whole system.
Faster back in service
The other big difference is cure time. HomeGuide says polyaspartic is fully cured in about one to two days and able to take heavy vehicles after 24 to 48 hours, while epoxy can take up to seven days. Bob Vila's guide lines up with that: foot traffic is fine on polyaspartic within 3 to 4 hours and cars within about 24, while epoxy needs about 12 hours for foot traffic and 3 days for cars. For a family that needs the garage back, or a seasonal owner who wants the work done in a short visit, that is a real advantage.
The trade-off: thickness and skill
Polyaspartic goes on thinner. HomeGuide puts it at 2 to 6 mils a coat, against 10 to 20 mils for epoxy. On a rough or pitted slab, that means more coats or an epoxy base underneath to build thickness. It also cures fast in the bucket and on the floor, especially on a hot day. Bob Vila calls it a job for professionals rather than DIYers, and we agree. Our crews mix only small amounts at a time, coat one section after another and save the work for the cooler hours, since August averages around 83 F here and slabs in the sun get much hotter.
Humidity and timing
Part of the reason polyaspartic cures so fast is that it reacts with water vapor in the air. That also means the weather on install day matters. Fort Myers gets most of its yearly rain in summer, and thunder is heard on about 89 days a year according to Wikipedia. We watch humidity, slab temperature and the dew point, and we plan around the afternoon storms rather than racing them. Dry-season months from October to May, when average monthly rain is under 3.5 inches, are often the easiest window for outdoor work.
Full system or topcoat only
We use polyaspartic two ways. As a full system, it goes down as a primer, a color or flake layer and a clear top, all polyaspartic, which cures fastest and resists UV most. As a topcoat only, it seals an epoxy base and flake layer. That hybrid builds thickness cheaply with epoxy and protects it with polyaspartic. Which one fits depends on the slab, the budget and how quickly you need the space back. We explain both at the estimate.
Lanais and covered outdoor floors
Screened lanais and covered patios are where polyaspartic earns its keep. Sun comes in at low angles in the morning and evening, rain blows through screens, and people walk barefoot from the pool. A textured polyaspartic finish with anti-slip grit stays clear, cleans with a hose, and does not turn amber the way exposed epoxy can. We keep colors light outdoors because dark coatings get hot in direct sun.
Prep is the same
A fast coating does not mean a fast prep. We diamond grind, repair cracks and test moisture before any polyaspartic goes down. After Hurricane Ian flooded many local garages in 2022, we also check for salt residue. Get a free estimate

How a Polyaspartic Job Runs
1. Test and plan
After a moisture test and slab check, we choose all-polyaspartic or epoxy underneath with polyaspartic on top.
2. Grind and repair
Diamond grinding and crack repair, then a thorough vacuum.
3. Coat in small batches
Each coat is mixed and applied in sections, timed around heat, humidity and storms.
4. Quick return
We give you exact times for foot traffic and vehicles, often the next day.

Why Choose Us for Polyaspartic Coatings
Used where the sun hits
We choose polyaspartic for floors that see daylight instead of leaving epoxy exposed.
Small-batch application
Mixing in small amounts keeps a fast-curing product from setting before it is spread.
Weather-aware schedule
Coats are planned around humidity, slab heat and afternoon storms.
Polyaspartic Coatings Questions
Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?
For sun and speed, yes. HomeGuide gives it an excellent mark for UV resistance and says it cures in one to two days. Epoxy is thicker per coat and less costly, so the two are often used together.
When can a car go on a new polyaspartic floor?
HomeGuide says heavy vehicles in 24 to 48 hours, and Bob Vila says about 24 hours. Heat and humidity on the day change that slightly, and we tell you the exact time.
Can polyaspartic go over my old epoxy?
Only if the old coating is well bonded. We test and usually grind it. If it is peeling anywhere, it comes off first.
Is polyaspartic a DIY product?
Not really. It cures quickly in the bucket and on the floor, so it needs experienced crews and small batches. Bob Vila's guide also says it is not for DIY.
